Synopsis

The Crucible is on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe, billed as an electrifying theatre event. Arthur Miller’s classic thriller is also timely, with Trump in charge of the USA. This brooding masterpiece about the Salem witch trials marks the first non-Shakespeare play ever to be revived in the outside surroundings of the Globe.

The Crucible the story
You’ll discover the story of 1690s Salem, New England, a place gripped by such terrible hysteria that the residents ultimately murdered many of their own. The play explores the tension between a repressive social order and individual freedom. Consumed by paranoia and superstition, rumours arise about a group of local girls practising witchcraft. As it turns out the townspeople are prepared to lie time and time again in order to survive. This shocking piece of theatre includes scenes of physical violence, scenes of a sexual nature, and references to sexual and physical abuse.

About The Crucible
A 1953 play by the American playwright Arthur Miller, The Crucible, dramatises the infamous Salem witch trials at Massachusetts Bay between 1692 and 1693. Miller wrote the play as an allegory for the horrors of McCarthyism, when those in power in the USA accused hundreds of people of being communists, persecuting and imprisoning the victims including Hollywood movie stars, authors, celebrities and artists.

The original 1953 Broadway cast was directed by Jed Harris and produced by Kermit Bloomgarden. It has seldom been off the stage since, including a 2002 Broadway revival directed by Richard Eyre and a Broadway revival directed by Ivo van Hove with an original score by Philip Glass.

The Crucible cast and creatives
Directed by Ola Ince (Othello, Romeo and Juliet) and designed by Amelia Jane Hankin, we have Lindsay McAllister as assistant director, Renell Shaw as composer, and voice and text by Annemette Verspeak. The play is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.

The raw intensity of The Crucible is a must-see at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2025. Arthur Miller’s classic tale of paranoid and power will present an electrifying production that turns history’s darkest trials into an unmissable night of theatre!
