The Buddha of Suburbia follows Karim, a mixed-race teenager in 1970s London, as he navigates the complexities of his identity and aspirations. As Karim explores his burgeoning sexuality and ambitions in the arts and as his father Haroon becomes a self-styled guru, he encounters a diverse array of characters and experiences that challenge and shape him. The Buddha of Suburbia poignantly captures Karim’s struggle to find his place amidst the cultural and social upheaval of the time.

About The Buddha of Suburbia
First published as a novel by Hanif Kureishi in 1990, The Buddha of Suburbia quickly garnered critical acclaim for its fresh perspective on race, culture, and identity in Britain. The novel won the Whitbread Award for Best First Novel in 1990, highlighting its impact and significance. Two years later in 1993, the BBC adapted the novel into a successful television series. The show was adapted for the stage for the first time in May 2024 and now will transfer to the Barbican Theatre following its critically acclaimed run in Stratford-upon-Avon.
