Synopsis

We join two love birds in the aftermath of a diversity awards night. Nathan has just given a speech on his lived experience of racism. Astrid just wants to get her groove on. And it just so happens that they’re on the verge of a crisis. Nathan isn’t getting turned on by Astrid’s moves anymore. He’s gone all sterile, tentative, withdrawn. It’s been months. And Astrid isn’t sure she can continue without her needs being met. She’s too full of desire to take Nathan’s sterility lying down.

What follows is a short stretch of time that offers a window into a dark night of the soul. An exploration of intimacy that is equal parts comedic and tragic, Speak of the Devil asks us to inhabit what it means for an interracial couple – in this case, black and white – to wade into the prickliness of race.
