Synopsis

Kyoto is a play by Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson (The Jungle) that transports audience members to the Kyoto Conference Centre on 11 December 1997. The play tells the tale of the historic climate summit in which the nations of the world are in a deadlock as they seek to reach a negotiation for the first legally binding emissions targets.

Kyoto in London has an excellent cast including Stephen Kunken (Billions), Jenna Augen (Leopoldstadt), Olivia Barrowclough (Theodosia), Jorge Bosch (Todos mienten), Nancy Crane (Design for Living), Andrea Gatchalian (Ikaria), Togo Igawa (Tetris), Kwong Loke (Sophocles’ Antigone: The Burial at Thebes), Dale Rapley (As You Like It), Raad Raw (Sons of the Prophet), and Ferdy Roberts (Macbeth).

The expert creative team includes Olivier award-winning directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin (Stranger Things: The First Shadow).

“Kyoto tells the story of a miraculous moment of agreement in which the seemingly impossible, became a reality. From the crucible of Kyoto emerged something extraordinary; a landmark moment in the history of climate legislation, which paved the way for much of the environmental progress we have witnessed in our lifetime,” Daldry and Martin said. “To bring Joe and Joe’s urgent and vital play to the heart of central London, feels entirely in-keeping with the international nature of this collaboration and we are delighted to be re-uniting with so many of the original company in our new home @sohoplace in 2025.”

The creative team also includes Set Design by Miriam Buether (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), Lighting Design by Aideen Malone (Charlie & Stan), Video Design by Akhila Krishnan (Mandela), Costume Design by Natalie Pryce (Newsies), Sound Design by Christopher Reid (Daddy Issues), and composition by Paul Englishby (Luther).
