Synopsis

They’re dark and scary. So why would you venture Into The Woods? To sell your cow, lift the spell that’s been put on you, visit your mum or see the king? Maybe the woods are where you’ll find yourself. Stephen Sondheim’s dazzling musical enjoys a major new revival at the Bridge Theatre for the first time since 2016.

Into The Woods the story
Four classic Brothers Grimm fairytales have been cleverly combined to create a tale about a baker, his wife and their quest to reverse the curse a wicked witch put on them, leaving them childless.

Together the baker and his wife plus the witch, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Rapunzel take us on a journey way beyond happy-ever-after to discover the things that really matter. A fantastic score and memorable storytelling mix with humour, a warm heart and scary twists to create an unmissable theatrical treat that is as enchanting as it is impossible to predict, where fairytales collide in unexpected ways. Prepare for a unique adventure… and be careful what you wish for.

About Into The Woods
This is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapines’ second collaboration, following on from 1984’s Sunday in the Park with George and written in 1986. It debuted in San Diego during 1986 and premiered on Broadway the following year, winning three Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical.

Since then it has been staged many times including a 1988 US tour, a 1990 West End production and a ten year anniversary concert in 1997. In 2002 it enjoyed a Broadway revival and 2010 saw it on stage at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, later transferring to a Shakespeare in the Park production in New York City. A Disney movie in 2014, which was nominated for several awards, was followed by a 2022 Broadway revival.
