Synopsis

Prepare to be spooked! The smash hit BBC TV series Inside No. 9 is coming to the West End with a brand new show specially written for the stage. The ninth and final TV series airs in May 2024, making this an opportunity No.9 fans won’t want to miss.

Enter the bizarre world of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith
The black comedy TV series, Inside No.9, began life in 2014 and was an instant hit, each a 30 minute self-contained story written by and starring Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith.

The pair first collaborated in the extraordinary hit TV series The League of Gentleman, a wonderfully bizarre show that also starred Mark Gatiss and Jeremy Dyson. Then they penned Psychoville. And the rest is history. The world inside number nine is a strange place full of weirdness and intrigue, and the new stage production is being billed as a theatrical experience like no other, bringing the TV show to startling life.

Expect the duo’s legendary web of twisted tales and scary humour, taking you from the eerie to the absurd and back again, blending comedy and horror with a script that keeps you guessing right until the last minute. There’ll be some familiar characters and stories along with fresh new material by Pemberton and Shearsmith, who also perform in the show. The Director is Simon Evans.

Surprising, weird, unsettling and always dramatic
Pemberton and Shearsmith are familiar with the West End stage. Pemberton recently starred alongside Lily Allen in The Pillowman at the Duke of York’s, and Shearsmith wowed us in The Unfriend at Wyndham’s Theatre, which is also where their new show will have its strictly limited 2025 run.

The pair have been considering a live show for years, ever since number nine first appeared on TV. Because every episode is separate and distinct the format is perfect for the theatre, basically a mini-play with only a few cast members and single locations. Now it’s actually happening, and No. 9’s many worldwide fans are thrilled.

Excitingly there are some surprises in store, harnessing the differences a theatre show offers in terms of comedy; a live audience behaves very differently to one person watching telly. Big comic moments will join spooky, ultra-dramatic content, and with a bit of luck, this will be just the first of a series of theatre shows by their new IN9 Theatre Company.

Just like the TV series, the duo wants viewers to go into the venue without a clue about what to expect. But we know one thing we can certainly expect: it’s going to be unsettling, and that’s exactly what audiences want from the creators of this unique theatre experience. It’s going to be satisfyingly weird, and it will give you the willies!
