In 2017, Girl From the North Country premiered at the Old Vic to overwhelming critical acclaim before making its way to Broadway. Now it returns to London for a limited nine week run. Set in 1934 in the town of Duluth, Minnesota, Conor McPherson’s moving story of love and loss follows a group of wayward travellers searching for meaning in a local guesthouse. It features over twenty of Bob Dylan’s unforgettable songs, each one backed by instruments from the 1930s.

Why you should see Girl From the North Country
It’s packed with some of Bob Dylan’s greatest hits, like ‘Went to See the Gypsy’, ‘Slow Train’, and ‘Sign on the Window’, performed by an incredibly talented cast, and will appeal to both fans of Dylan and those unfamiliar with his music.
Described by the Guardian as a ‘remarkable fusion of text and music’ and by the Evening Standard as ‘beguiling and soulful’, Girl From the North Country won critical acclaim throughout its original run and successive world tour, and is sure to continue winning hearts this time around.
Rae Smith’s set and costume design and Simon Hale’s musical arrangement, featuring instruments from the 1930s, will transport you back into Depression-era America.

What is Girl From the North Country about?
Named for the Bob Dylan song and set in his hometown of Duluth, Girl From the North Country is a love letter to the works of Bob Dylan. In the aftermath of the Great Depression, we are introduced to a rundown guesthouse on the shores of Lake Superior in Duluth. A motley crew – packed with classic archetypes like the preacher struggling with his faith and the drunken aspiring writer – come together seeking connection and meaning through song.

Award-winning Irish playwright Conor McPherson (The Weir, Port Authority) has woven together several colourful characters and storylines into a harrowing portrait of 1930s America: a society driven into despair but slowly finding its way back towards hope. Bob Dylan’s songs, hymns about love and coloured by a very American sort of longing, make a very fitting soundtrack to this setting and story.

After a critically-acclaimed, award-winning premiere and world tour, Girl From the North Country is back at the Old Vic for a strictly limited nine-week run. So don’t miss your last chance to catch this unforgettable homage to Bob Dylan’s discography set during a powerful chapter in American history.
