About Evita
Beginning life as a rock opera concept album in 1976, Don’t Cry For Me Argentina itself was released in 1976 and the album went gold. Opening in 1978 in the West End, Elaine Paige famously aced the lead role along with Joss Ackland as Juan Perón. It was made into a five-Academy-Award-winning movie starring Madonna in 1996. Today Evita is widely regarded as Webber’s greatest musical and one of his finest collaborations with Tim Rice.
Runs at Los Angeles and San Francisco then a premiere on Broadway sealed its reputation as something seriously special. In 1980 it won seven Tony Awards including Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical of the year. 1981 saw the cast recording awarded a Grammy. Since then it has turned up all over the world, from Austria to Spain, Mexico to South Africa.
