Why you should see All My Sons
It has an all-star cast, featuring Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, along with Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Gangs of London) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths, The Amen Corner).
Ivo Van Hove has won global acclaim and multiple awards for his avant-garde and experimental approach to theatre production and storytelling. All My Sons will be his third time directing a revival production of an Arthur Miller play, the first two being A View From the Bridge in 2015 and The Crucible in 2016.
There’s a reason why Arthur Miller’s plays continue to be performed decades after they were written. He had an uncanny ability to capture the flaws and moral failings of human nature and society, and this play about the dark side of capitalism and the American Dream feel disturbingly relevant today.
What is All My Sons about?
Written in 1946 by Arthur Miller, All My Sons is the story of successful and self-made American businessman Joe Keller, who sells defective airplane parts to the army during World War II. Joe narrowly escapes criminal conviction by letting his business partner Steve take the fall. But peacetime doesn’t bring peace of mind – his wife Kate is convinced that their son, Larry, who was declared missing in action, is still alive, while their other son, Chris, decides to marry his brother’s fiancée. As Joe grapples with guilt, his perfect family starts to crumble around him.
A popular play and classic story, All My Sons has seen several productions over the years, with the most recent West End revival being in 2019 at the Old Vic, starring Sally Field and Bill Pullman. This will be Ivo Van Hove’s third take on Arthur Miller, and he commented that the play’s “themes of personal integrity and moral reckoning remain as urgent and resonant today as ever.”
A story of greed, family tragedy, and guilt, This is a star-studded cast with a visionary director.
