International theatre company Dead Centre will make its Royal Court Theatre debut with Deaf Republic from August 2025. This new drama centred around modern war, humanity and collective defiance, has been adapted from poems by the Ukrainian-American author Ilya Kaminsky. What is Deaf Republic about?
Based on his critically acclaimed second poetry collection, Ilya Kaminsky’s Deaf Republicis set in an occupied territory. A deaf boy is killed for disobeying orders that he couldn’t hear. The next morning, the entire community have woken up deaf.
Brought to life in collaboration with Sign Language poet Zoƫ McWhinney, Deaf Republic will bring together a collective of deaf and hearing actors, aerial performers, puppetry, live cinema and poetry in this groundbreaking new performance. It plays at the Royal Court Theatre for a limited season.
